Naveed Chaudhry on Friday said, “there is nothing new in the contempt law his party was going to introduce in parliament as it is almost the same as was proposed by the last government of Nawaz Sharif”. He said the Sharifs even had brought the contempt bill in the parliament after approval from the standing committee but Musharraf’s dictatorial regime removed it. He said that the law was not aimed at reducing powers of any institution but to remove the lacunas in the constitution. Such a law was required as there was no contempt of court law in the country after the current law in this regard had lapsed in 2004. The 17th Amendment provided legal cover to the laws issued up to December 31, 2003 while that of 2004 were left uncovered, he added.
