A Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Jinnah International Airport (JIA) electro-mechanical technician Saif-ur-Rehman was beaten up by Airport Security Force (ASF) staff for failing to resolve an electrical problem at the ASF Deputy Director Deneral (DDG) Col Farooque’s residence. In an interview with Pakitan Today on Monday, Rehman said: “In the night between June 13 and 14, we had received complaints from some of houses of the CAA staff colony about an electrical fault and a team was rushed to the spot to correct it. The team came back and demanded electrical wire to fix the fault. Meanwhile, DDG ASF stormed the CAA Electric Complaint Cell (ECC) with ASF guards over a failure to remedy an electric fault at his residence. DDG ASF was welcomed warmly, but started abusing the staff present at the complaint cell. I briefed him about developments regarding his complaint and assured him that I had sent the team with the necessary equipment to deal with the electric fault. However, he did not listen to me and started abusing me. When I asked why he was misbehaving, he called 10 to 12 ASF guards and ordered them to beat me, saying that I am a terrorist and a member of the Taliban.”
“The ASF guards bet me brutally and left the office. I was rushed to a CAA healthcare facility and later shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for treatment. I went to the airport police station to lodge a FIR against Col Farooque but the police only registered my report and told me to come back with request by Airport Manager Nasir Sheikh to register the case. I went to the airport manager’s office the very next day but he presented lame excuses to me to protect the DDG ASF. Since then, I have been visiting offices of CAA officials but they have turned deaf ears to my issue. I am neither a terrorist nor a member of the Taliban. I need justice from the CAA,” he added. CAA Senior Works Engineer Abid Hussain said that the department had sent a letter to Inquiry, Industrial Relations and Management General Manager (GM) Muhammad Ali Arshad Khan for necessary action. “Saif-ur-Rehman sent a team to for correction of the fault, but electric wire was required as the old one was burnt due to excessive load. I think the team returned with electric wire in 20 minutes, but ASF DDG, along with ASF guards, reached the complaint cell and stormed at Saif,” he verified.
When approached for comments on this issue, Nasir Sheikh rejected Saif-ur Rehman’s claims. “I have not stopped him from taking any action against Col Farooque. Saif came to my office the next day and told me about the incident and I listened to him. The next day, I called Col Farooque to verify Saif-ur-Rehman’s claims. I tried to settle the issue and called him to come to a compromise but he did not return to the table talks. Saif did not say that he was interested in registration a FIR against Col Farooque and he did not discuss the issue with me,” said Sheikh. In absence of Inquiry, Industrial Relations and Management GM, who sustained bullet wounds on resisting a robbery in Gulistan-e-Jauhar a few days ago, an official of the department, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the matter had been referred to the defence secretary. He added that the department had requested the secretary to form a joint committee of ASF and CAA to probe into matter and had not yet received a response.
