Following Sunday’s massive crackdown on its leadership by the Punjab government, the Young Doctors Association (YDA) intensified its strike on Monday, refusing to work even in emergency and indoor wards of all major hospital across the province, resulting in the deaths of 11 patients, including three minor children.
On the other hand, the Punjab government continued with its steely stance and dismissed 24 doctors, while arresting more than 50 others.
To cope with the crisis, the Punjab government had requested the Pakistan Army to send in doctors for managing patients and around 149 army medical officers started work in various hospitals of Punjab on Monday.
The Inter-Services Public Relations said 90 army medical officers had been employed in hospitals in Lahore, 15 each in Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan and 14 in Gujranwala.
The government had initiated action against the young doctors after they refused to end the strike and warned of laying siege to the Punjab CM’s Secretariat to get their demands approved.
The Punjab government on Monday arrested 34 YDA doctors under MPO-16 and shifted them to Kot Lakhpat Jail, while 3 doctors in Gujranwala were sacked from services and two others were charged with murder. Lahore District Coordination Officer Noorul Ameen confirmed the arrests.
Declining to bow down to the Punjab government’s pressure tactics, the YDA announced a Punjab-wide strike from Monday. The call for strike drew support from YDA Islamabad and the Sindh Doctors Association who shut out patient departments (OPDs) and operation theaters for two hours.
The Pakistan Medical Association Punjab also announced to observe black day today (Tuesday) against the police action on young doctors. The Faisalabad Medical Teachers Association (MTA) also supported the demands of YDA and demanded the release of the arrested doctors in Lahore and other cities of the Punjab.
The Young Doctors Association Balochistan had also announced to call a strike, but it ended the strike after seven hours after Balochistan Chief Minister Aslam Raisani took serious notice of sufferings of the patients.
Meanwhile on Monday, OPDs of several hospitals across the province remained open as army’s medical officers and senior government doctors remained present to treat the patients.
Adviser to CM on Health Salman Rafiq told reporters that the government was forced to take steps against the young doctors as they wanted to close indoor wards of the hospitals, adding that the YDA strike could endanger the people’s life.
He said that the provincial health department deployed around 596 new doctors across the province to tackle the crisis.
Rafiq said 57 new doctors were deputed to Mayo Hospital, 90 to Services Hospital, 50 to Jinnah hospital, 27 to General Hospital, 40 to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and 19 to Punjab Institute of Cardiology. In Faisalabad, the government posted 30 new doctors in KPMC, 50 in Allied Hospital and 10 in FIC hospital.
The government deputed 39 new doctors to Holy Family Hospital Rawalpindi, six to DHQ Rawalpindi, while 70 new doctors were deputed to Nishtar Hospital Multan and 76 to Sheikh Zaid Hospital Rahim Yar Khan.
Another 32 were posted in Victoria Hospital Bahawalpur, he added. The Punjab government has asked qualified candidates seeking paid jobs in teaching hospitals to contact the government hospitals’ administrations with their required degrees and other attached documents. Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah warned young doctors to avoid participating in the strike and said all those who participated in the strike would face serious consequences. He said the government would not allow the doctors to play with the life of innocent people.
Also, reports said a two-year-old child died at Lahore’s Mayo Hospital due to the absence of the doctors and an FIR had been filed against six doctors, of which four were arrested and presented before a judicial magistrate. The magistrate sent the doctors, Tajammul, Adil, Usman and Matloob on a four-day physical remand. Reports pouring in late at night quoted the provincial health department as saying that 918 young doctors joined duty in various teaching hospitals across the province on Monday. It said 98 doctors took responsibilities at Mayo Hospital, 114 at Services Hospital, 62 at Jinnah Hospital, 45 at Lahore General Hospital, 41 at Children’s Hospital, 46 at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, while 25 new doctors had joined PIC.

  1. i think Gov should be more blamed, at least doctors should be given decent salary for their living after years of their hard work. They should discuss the matter on the table and try to find out acceptable win win situation by considering the problems of the patients who are already sick and tired of the prevailing condition of the policies of the Bad governance….!

  3. ^I disagree. If this society was based on following dreams and intuition rather than money and material, doctors wouldn’t consider going on a strike. The next time someone tries to find the balance between hard work and its rewards, please consider the life of a child laborer who not only receives a harsher upbringing but also lacks luxuries or social dignity that doctors get….

  4. oh really, dr shouldnt do this…how many of you have dr in ur family…how many ppl are here, had so many starved nyts. jst keepin a single dream in eyes ..oneday bhai or beta will b a doctor n all the probx will no longer b there..

Iv society here is based on dreams ,th n do consider th dreams of a dr. N his family belongs to a low class….

  5. @Ghufrana ,what you mentioned is all about choices and opportunities. Nobody stopped them from working at private hospitals where they could earn five digit salaries. They chose to work for the govt. and thats that. That being said have you even seen what the YDA is demanding ? Direct recruitment to Grade 18 ,interest-free loans ,cars and houses and mind you these are just young doctors.
their demands are not only unreasonable but impossible for a cash starved province like ours. They shot themselves in the foot when they started abandoning patients for bucks. Ab tooti na tangain ,what goes around comes around .

  6. Shame on these doctors. They have taken oath to protect the lives of humans.
I say charge these blackmailing doctors with 302 for they are directly responsible for the deaths of patients.

  7. These "doctors" have no business being a doctor. They have chosen the wrong profession. If they just want to make money at any cost, they should have just joined ppp and gotten govt. jobs other than medical field. They are a disgrace to this noble profession. They should be dealt with severely and a few should be punisshed to death. We all know now why they became doctors. Their real faces have been exposed.

  8. It is just a matter of time when Mr. Chaudhary Nisar will find a hand of ISI behind all this fiasco.

    • I have a problem when this doctor in particular says " shehbaz sharifs pakistan doesn’t deserve me" I have no affiliations of any sort or affection for Shahabaz Sharif. But the Pakistan he says is Shabaz Sharif’s is of all the Pakistanis. And if he says that " shehbaz sharifs pakistan doesn’t deserve me" then There is only one Pakistan, and then he is saying to me and all the Pakistanis. Pakistan doesn't deserve him. I have no issues had he left the day his father advised him to. But I have issues if he leaves for the US or any country he wishes to, saying "Pakistan doesn't deserve him". His so called facts stink of arrogance, if he was the No 2 out of 40000 then he should be grateful to Allaha for blessing him with the intelligence and the brains. If he secured 16 gold medals in 12 subjects in the best medical collage in Lahore, which coincidental is in the same Pakistan that he doesn't ever want to come back to and feels doesn't deserve him that again is not the fault of Pakistan. If he is angry at SS (Shahbaz Sharif) then the very same SS with his same governance was the CM of the very Lahore in which he became a doctor. If he is upset the doctors are neglected and Rps41240 is not enough then did he have a look around him? Or can he only see himself as the victim ? Are doctors the only ones neglected in Pakistan. What about all those people the nurses, the cleaners and relevant medical staff ? How much are they getting paid ? How much is the police getting paid in Pakistan? How wonderfully cared for ? How much are the teachers getting paid? Ever bothered to think of them? That would be a human thing to do, I wonder if that was part of any of those 12 subjects he secured gold medals in? If one believes in certain values one should be ready to be take a stand and even be persecuted for those. It is amazing how "education" which is supposed to broaden the horizon in our country is narrowing the visions of people like him. Yet all i see is an individual brilliantly trained in he physiology and anatomy of humans and its working to a limited degree who with all the academic brilliance has yet to become a human being?

      • @Khalid Matloob. Excellent reply. Very well worded and very thoughful. Thank you. I wish more people followed your thought process.

    • Ghufrana Naqvi , you have proven that education ALONE cannot make people human beings. I know you have worked even harder to get your H1b visa :). Hope you make enough money and never come back. Good luck.

Just don't say you love Pakistan, because that's just a lie. Its our Pakistan, not yours.

  13. Yet another example of disastrous administration of Shahbaz Sharif. He thinks being rude is a sign of being a good administrator. The problem is that under the Constitution, Shahbaz Sharif is not even a Member of Punjab Assembly. The other big problem is that the notorious Dual PCO Judge Iftikhar is not ready to proceed in the case pending in SC. Punjab is under illegal occupation of a usurper named Shahbaz Sharif.

  20. Doctors forget that most of the their study expenses are paid by the tax people pay and now they are refusing to treat the same people. Will they refuse to treat their own children and let them die?
There is NO justification from doctors to refuse treatment to a dying patient. That's professional negligence and murder charges should be laid every doctor on duty but absent.

  21. Death of one pt is sufficient to put YDA high command in Jail..
They must be made to pay for their strike. By their empolee status, They have to listen to their employer. If they do not, FIRE them right away and show no MERCY.
I am really mad at them. They do not care for these poor people.
