Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has directed the Finance Ministry to release the funds allocated for the Higher Education Commission (HEC). The general body of the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations (FAPUASA) had set June 30 as deadline for the federal government to release funds worth Rs 6 billion for the (HEC). They had threatened to launch countrywide agitation if the government failed to release the amount.
A total of Rs 12 billion were not released during the fiscal year 2011-12. Of the total amount, Rs 6 billion were meant for development and another Rs 6 billion for recurring expenditures. For the fiscal year 2012-2013, the government allocated an amount Rs 10 billion less than the HEC’s demand. A spokesman for the PM’s House said that Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf had telephoned the finance secretary and ordered him to immediately release the HEC funds.
