According to a report on “Rain Emergency” released by the Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET) on Thursday, Karachi needs a major drainage plan before the monsoon season.
A SSUET statement said that the report was issued on the directive of its Chancellor Z.A. Nizami. Nizami maintained that whenever there was heavy rainfall in Karachi which coincided with high tides in the Arabian Sea, basic civic services such as storm water drainage, water supply, sewerage, power supply, accessibility and movement within the city were disrupted, which in turn brought the citizens’ daily life almost to a standstill. He added that it also caused loss of life and damage to property. This situation, he emphasized, warranted suitable measures prior to the start of the monsoon season, preferably well in advance so as to minimize the citizens’ misery and to avoid any loss of life and property.
Nizami said that the report discussed threadbare problems and their solutions while keeping in mind the rains’ impact on civic services. He added that the recommendations of the report were based on past experience and were service-oriented. He also said that the role of civic bodies, efforts of NGOs and media coverage had also been acknowledged and could help improve the on-ground situation in the long run.
According to the report, there are a 100 vulnerable spots in Karachi where flooding occurs whenever there is rainfall and for which technical solutions are needed.
