A large part of a pedestrian bridge constructed on the Harbanspura Ring Road collapsed on a truck that was passing underneath it, killing two people on Thursday. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken notice of the incident. The debris destroyed the truck completely. Traffic from airport to Harbanspura was suspended. After the accident, rescue teams reached the spot and removed a dead body and a critically injured person after four hours. The driver of the truck, identified as Rana Sajjad from Sargodha, passed away on the spot while the seriously injured passenger passed away on the way to the hospital. Lahore commissioner Javaid Rafiq Butt, police and other law enforcement agencies reached the incident site.
Meanwhile, the CM ordered immediate enquiry into the matter and also ordered that a report be presented to him within that day. He constituted an investigating team comprising chairman of MIT, C&W secretary, chief engineer south and dean of UET. “Strict action will be taken against those responsible for this accident,” the CM said while talking to the reporters at the incident site. Police arrested the owner of Rauf Construction Company, Khalid Rauf, on direction of the chief minister. Shadman Police handed Rauf over to the Anti-Corruption Cell where he will be investigated further. Investigations are underway regarding usage of substandard construction material in making of the bridge, police sources said.
INITIAL REPORT:
Initial reports by the investigation team revealed that the pedestrian bridge was constructed in haste and with low quality, substandard material. The welding and the bolts were also weak which led to the collapse of the bridge. The team also raised questions regarding the quality of the other projects undertaken by the said company.
Very bad.
Dear Nawaz,
Please take care of your people.
the only one who should be taken to task is that Chief Minister who is actually a donkey in human's form. if he hadn't specifically ordered hasty construction and waved his finger in the air like a madman, things might have been different. Everytime that donkey CM raises his fingers to give an order I feel like slapping him.
