Afghanistan threatens to go to UN over ‘Pakistani shelling’ in Kunar

Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s office is increasing pressure on Pakistan to address the ongoing shelling into Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province by threatening to take the matter to the UN Security Council. Karzai’s Deputy Spokesman Seyamak Herawi told media on Wednesday that if Pakistan does not stop the shelling into Kunar “the issue will be brought to the UN Security Council”.
Kunar province, which shares a border with Pakistan, has been bombarded with nearly 850 missiles from across the border in the past month, provincial spokesman Wasifullah Wasifi alleged.
While casualties have remained low, more than 500 families have been displaced in an attempt to flee the shelling, he said.
Most of the families are from the province’s Naray district, adjacent to Pakistan, he added. One resident said that at least three civilians had died from the shelling and four others had been wounded. Pakistan has denied that its forces are involved in the recent shelling.
