Pervez Elahi becomes Deputy PM, finally

Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid leader Chaudhry Pervez Elahi has been appointed deputy prime minister. According to a private TV channel, a notification to this effect was issued late on Monday that stated that Elahi would not exercise the powers of the prime minister. Some media reports stated that the position had been created to provide a backup for times when the incumbent prime minister was not available or incapacitated. Earlier, 15 members belonging to the PML-Q were sworn in as federal ministers and ministers of state while former minister Riaz Hussain Pirzada refused to rejoin the cabinet. President Asif Ali Zardari administered oath to Sardar Bahadur Khan Sehar, Liaquat Abbas Bhatti, Sardar Talib Hussain Nakai, Sheikh Waqas Akram, Anwar Ali Cheema, Ghous Bukhsh Mehr, Jam Muhammad Yousaf and Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain. Rana Asif Tauseef, Malik Nauman Ahmed Langrial, Sardar Shahjehan Yousaf, Senator Saeed Khan Mandokhel, Chaudhry Ghias Ahmed Mela, Akram Masih Gill and Khawaja Sheraz Mehmood were inducted as the new ministers of state.
Meanwhile, Online news agency reported that Riaz Pirzada had refused to join the federal cabinet. According to Online sources, after failing to secure important ministries for PML-Q members, Chaudhry Shujaat and his cousin Pervez Elahi were having a hard time in convincing their party’s parliamentarians to take charge of their previous ministries. The source said that Shujaat had set up a consultative committee headed by Elahi to remove and review reservations of the annoyed parliamentarians. Earlier, Faisal Saleh Hayat and Raza Hayat Hiraj had refused to join Pervez Ashraf’s cabinet.

  14. Congratulations Mr Illahi. Are you going to be the next Prime Minster? It is good that Pakistan is gradually going through the process of political maturation and politicians who are otherwise not reasonable standing are in the process of fading away after having served more than their expiry date.

    It appears Pakistan will eventually get a stable forward looking political leadership. That I feel will happen after Imran Khan has had his tenure.

    Politicians in Pakistan owe a lot to their generals especially Gen Kayani for not directly interfering in the political process this time.

  17. These back stabbers are waiting for their turn. They have no loyalty to anyone. Four years ago they were they biggest enemies of ppp and today they are bed buddies 🙂 As long as Pakistani people keep voting these crooks in, they will keep destroying Pakistan.

    • What about PMLN having alliance with PPP for 10 years after 1999, and what will u say about Imran Khan in cohort with MQM after calling them traitors for a long time and having lodged cases against MQM in UK. It feels better to taunt opponents for the things which your favorites have already done. Buddy politics is always for power. What wud u say about LiberalParty of UK in alliance with Conservatives(having opposing idealogies).

      • I haven't heard Imran Khan forming alliances with anyone. I have a very low opinion of PMLN. I think MQM has no morals or principles. I do agree that politics is about power but I do think that this power can be used in a positive way instead of using it to fill your own coffers at the expense of the nation.

        • IK was reported to be hobnobbing with MQM. He s improved his relations with MQM because he expects to form an alliance with them if he wins elections which he is not sure to win absolutely, especially in Sindh he wud hv to form govt with MQM in the lead. They r blaclmailers and they will put him on hook and Karachi situation will further worsen. They will exploit him to further strengthen their hold on Sindh. Pakistan's economy will never improve unless Karachi situation gets better.

          • @JuliusCeasar. I have to admit I agree with your analysis. IK is new to this game. He will learn to form alliances. You are right, MQM will blackmail him for their support. He will have to make compromises. He may use his position, if elected, to pressure UK govt. to go after Altaf Hussain. Once he gets Altaf in a vulnerable position, his hold on MQM may loosen. If that happens, you might see some defections. Someone has to cause a rift amongst MQM leaders. IK should be prepared to impose Governor Raj in Sindh if need be. It may get worse before it gets better but it has to be done.
