Senior citizens prefer peaceful shelter homes

A growing number of old people are moving to the shelter homes just to stay away from any unpleasant confrontation with their children.
Sending old people to shelter homes was considered to be a taboo, a while ago as people feared social repercussion from fellow society members but the situation has changed, as now more number of senior citizens prefers the old age homes.
With stiff competition and mad rush for glory in professional fields reaching its highest crescendo, old people find it difficult to maneuver through the complex labyrinth of urban lifestyle.
A growing number of old people are moving to the shelter homes just to steer away from any unpleasant confrontation with their children. They prefer spending the second innings of their life independently. Some of them bond with their peers well in the process.
One such old age home is Old Age Home which is considered to be the best old age home in the city. The home has basic facilities for the poor senior citizens from different parts of the country.
Most of the boarders residing at ‘Old Age Home’ have come there because their children have no time for them.
But there are some who have opted voluntarily to reside there to steer clear from any possible bickering with their children.
“My husband advised me to live independently to avoid confrontation with the children, before he died. Besides, I love my independence. I keep myself engaged reading books, writing and helping my peers”, Afshan Begum in old age home told APP.
My son keeps telling me to get back but now ‘Old Age Home’ is my home,’ said Kausar Uzair.
Rukhsana Shah, a psychiatrist, said, “What we see today is a clash of values and opinions.” Parents and children today cannot connect mentally, and tend to blame each other.
There should be empathy and a mutual respect for one another. Parents used to be socio-centric and today, children are ego-centric. But changes are not always a negative factor.
