Istanbul model to be used to set up garbage transfer

KMC Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed said Istanbul model will be used for setting up garbage transfer stations of 2 thousand tons capacity in five towns of the city which would be completed by December. These GTS would be used to dispose off 9 thousand tons garbage generated in the city.
He said this on a visit to solid waste management system and garbage transfer station in Istanbul.
Administrator Karachi on this occasion praised the sanitation and solid waste management system in Istanbul. He said this system here was being run on scientific basis.
Senior Director Solid Waste Management of Istanbul Municipality while giving a briefing said that a total of seven garbage transfer stations were located right in the middle of city populace. Small vehicles carry 14 thousand tons garbage from different city areas and transmit it to the GTS. These garbage transfer stations were designed in such a way that they did not put any adverse effect on the city population.
Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed was informed that all of these GTS were setup with very low cost and they also have least operational cost.
Administrator Karachi during his visit also met with the Chief Executive of Istanbul Transportation Company Mr. Umer Yildiz and discussed with him in detail about the improvement in Karachi’s transport system, Metro Rail System and Restoration of Circular Railway System in Karachi with the cooperation of Turkey.
He said the city’s circular railway system would be started by September next year with the collaboration of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He further said that the city of Karachi was facing troubles due to shortage of public transport and it had become necessary to bring in more big and metro buses on city roads along with the restoration of Karachi’s Circular Railway System.
Administrator Karachi said that the number of personal vehicles including motorcycles, chingchi rikshows and other transport means had reached to alarming proportion in Karachi.
Chief Executive of Istanbul Transportation Company informed the Pakistan delegation about the transportation system in Istanbul. He said that the municipality runs the transport system in Istanbul and it also manages to run the metro railway over and under ground with the trams and circular railway. He said that the metro railway also connects the both eastern and western parts of Istanbul city. This project was getting further extension via tunnel in the sea and it would complete in a year.
He said these projects were initiated 20 years back and now these were giving lot of convenience to the 13 million people in Istanbul.
Adminsitrator Muhammad Hussain Syed said we would get benefit of the experiences and skills of Istanbul so that the public transport system in Karachi could be run in a better and effective way. He said the brother Islamic country Turkey had always supported us in good and bad times and we would deficiently like to take the advantage of professional expertise of Istanbul Municipality. He also paid a detailed visit to the metro extension project in Istanbul.
