Shab-e-Meraj, the night when the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ascended to the highest levels of heavens, would be observed on Sunday night across the country with religious devotion, serenity and traditional fervour. The Muslims around the world observe Shab-e-Miraj in which the Holy Prophet (PBUH) went on a special journey to meet Allah Almighty, crossing seven heavens on a mythological steed named “al-Buraq”.
According to Islamic tradition, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) travelled from his house in Mecca to al Aqsa mosque, where he offered prayers before embarking on the Buraq with archangel Jibreel to the heavens. The word Miraj is derived from the Arabic word Urooj, which means “height”, or “ascension”. It is celebrated on 27th of Rajab, according to the Islamic calendar. During Miraj, the command for five daily prayers was also given to the Holy Prophet (PBUH). The Muslims will offer special prayers at their homes and mosques, which would be decorated to celebrate one of the most significant miracles of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
