The mystery behind availability of public and private airlines’ refreshment accessories in the private functions and open market has been resolved.
Friday saw the law enforcers arresting an organised group in the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) while shifting the stolen airlines’ essentials including paper cups, trays, tissue papers, cookies and beverages to the open market for sale. The theft was carried out in CAA ambulance that was deployed for first aid to passengers at the Jinnah International Airport (JIA) Karachi. An Airport Security Force (ASF) official held the CAA ambulance on suspicious movement in night and recovered stolen refreshment accessories of airlines from it on way to the open market.
ASF held stolen material and the CAA staff and transferred it to its headquarter. The investigation, which was carried out by the ASF, revealed that the group stole the refreshment accessories of airlines during loading and dumped theft material in CAA ambulance. In night, the dumped material was shifted to market for sale. The CAA held an inquiry against the arrested members of the said organized group.
On March 26, 2012, a group of CAA staff has planned safe exit of stolen airlines material in presence of acting shift in-charge Ashraf Waheed. The shift in-charge along with collaboration of fire superintendent Alam Zaib hired CAA MI Room ambulance for shifting of stolen material to the market, but this time they failed. However, ASF held suspicious ambulance at JIA Karachi Gate-A when ambulance that was deployed at airport for shifting of any passenger to the hospital in case of emergency came with leave pass at the gate without any passenger. Four CAA officials of CAA Fire Superintendent Alam Zaib, Motor Transfer Officer (MTO) Special Vehicle Driver Tufail Ahmed and Shift In-charge Ashraf Waheed were held responsible by the ASF in its investigation. However, the shift in-charge escaped away from the case and said that fire superintendent Alam Zaib took a short leave and he has no idea about such activities at airport. ASF transferred the case to CAA for action. CAA has formed committee to probe into this matter but the authority yet to initiate any action against people involved.
However, the committee has failed to sum-up the case as Alam Zaib has personal relations with General Manager (GM) CAA Human Resource Raja Latif and he was trying to stop inquiry of this incident. During late night development, it was learnt that CAA has decided to nominate the CAA staffers involved in this case as they have earned bad name for authority. As per recommendations, the committee has recommended strict action against SVD Tufail Ahmed, Fire Superintendent Alam Zaib, MTD Abrar Khan and Medical Assistant Muhammad Yousuf.

  1. Obviously the security vetting of airport personnel is a joke. If these thieves could steal, then a terrorist could plant a bomb.
