World Blood Donor Day will be observed on Thursday (tomorrow) across the world, including Pakistan, to raise awareness about the importance of safe blood supplies.
On 14 June, countries worldwide celebrate World Blood Donor Day with events to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.
The theme of the 2012 World Blood Donor Day campaign, ‘Every Blood Donor is a Hero’ focuses on the idea that every one of us can become a hero by giving blood. While recognizing the silent and unsung heroes who save lives every day through their blood donations, the theme also strongly encourages more people all over the world to donate blood voluntarily and regularly. Many events are held around the world on June 14 to mark World Blood Donor Day. These include football matches, concerts and mobile blood donation clinics. In 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) called upon communities world- wide to symbolically “paint the world red” by coloring, covering or lighting monuments and landmarks. Despite about 92 million yearly blood donations worldwide, safe blood is constantly on high demand, especially in developing countries.
World Blood Donor Day falls on the birthday of Karl Landsteiner (June 14, 1868). He created the ABO blood group system, which is still used today to ensure the safety of blood transfusions. WHO chose 14 June as the day to recognize the millions of people who save lives and improve the health of others by donating blood. The day highlights the need to regularly give blood to prevent shortages in hospitals and clinics, particularly in developing countries where quantities are very limited.
