Being home to many civilisations in the past, Pakistan has a very rich and diversified cultural heritage. All the provinces of Pakistan have their own unique cultures and traditions.
This rich intangible culture is in a fragile state and in danger of being lost due to various internal and external factors and needs to be safeguarded. Pakistan has an obligation to implement the convention for safeguarding and promoting its cultural heritage.
UNESCO Islamabad in partnership with the Punjab Culture Department is organising a four-day training workshop for the capacity building of the relevant government institutions to implement the 2003 UNESCO convention for safeguarding culture.
The opening session of the training workshop was organised on Tuesday, where eminent experts on cultural heritage sites in Pakistan attended the session. UNESCO Director Dr Kozue Kay Nagata was chief guest at the occasion.
She said the Indus valley and Gandhara civilisations had a deep-rooted history and cultural heritage. “Although the term intangible cultural heritage is relatively new, but the concept is as old as humanity,” she said.
Punjab Culture and Information Secretary Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani appreciated the role of UNESCO in protecting and safeguarding culture and thanked Dr Kozue Kay Nagata for supporting and organising the workshop.
