Rise in mercury attracts people to hilly areas

Thousands of people are visiting the hilly areas adjacent to the federal capital to beat the summer heat through recreational activities. Around 15,000 local tourists visit Murree, Nathiagali, Ayubia and other popular spots on daily basis due to rising temperature from twin cities and other parts of the country, said an official of Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) while talking to APP.
With summer vacation in educational institutions, families and groups of youngsters have started moving to these areas to spend their holidays in pleasant weather. The official of PTDC said the people will keep on visiting these areas till mid August to enjoy their vacation through unforgettable experience of picturesque landscapes, waterfalls and other glimpses of nature. Close to Murree Hills, other less developed picnic spots are also getting popularity for day-long trips.
For tourists, mountains are considered as the place for leisure activities. People admire the beauty of these areas for the reasons of the climate and clean air, varied topography, beautiful scenery, local traditions and simple life styles. The domestic tourists consider Murree, Nathiagali and Ayubia as most accessible tourist spot to spend summer vacation.
The most popular feature of Chairlift also serves the visitors with exciting opportunities to experience an elevated passenger ropeway over the mountains in environment friendly way.
PCRWR chairman receives President’s medal for technology: Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) Chairman Dr. Muhammad Aslam Tahir has awarded Presidential Medal for Technology for achieving excellence in the field of Science & Technology for the year 2009 in recognition of his achievements in the field of Chemistry.
Talking to APP here Monday, Federal Minister for Science & Technology Mir Changez Khan Jamali appreciated the best performance of Dr. Aslam and said that he is a hardworker and honest officer of ministry. He said that present government is working for the development of the technology in the country.
His remarkable achievement includes the establishment & standardization of National Water Quality Laboratory of PCRWR, which was the first ISO-17025 accredited testing and research laboratory in water sector and is well equipped with state of art equipment solely for water and waste water in the country. He also initiated National Water Quality Monitoring Program which generate the first detailed water quality profile of Pakistan. He has more than 21 publications/reports and has presented research based water quality presentations at national and international forums. Recently, Dr. Tahir has developed innovative and low cost household Arsenic Removal Safe Water Filter to overcome the arsenic contamination issue after tremendous day and night research based efforts.
