The Awami National Party (ANP) has told the federal government that it should act in accordance with the constitution if it plans to form new provinces. Speaking on the floor of the House during the budget session of National Assembly on Friday, ANP lawmaker Pervez Khan vowed to oppose any attempt of constituting new provinces that went against the constitution. He said his party struggled to change the name of their province for 60 years, but they would not accept formation of new provinces only by casting votes in the National Assembly.
He said that Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani brought the issue of Seraiki province into limelight only to grab votes in the coming elections. Khan further said that the dearth of basic necessities in Karachi had caused problems, adding that a special package for Karachi should have been given in the budget. Stating that Rs 20 million were needed for the construction and repair of barrages, but the government had not allocated funds for the purpose. Muttahida Qaumi Movement MNA Abdur Rasheed Godial said on the occasion that Karachi produced 75 percent revenue for the country, while questioning how much of that revenue was being spent on mega projects in Karachi.
