Commissioner seeks protection for picnickers

Commissioner of Karachi Roshan Ali Shaikh on Thursday sought support of all concerned civic agencies and Pakistan Navy for measures to protect picnickers visiting beaches against any untoward incident. In his letter issued to heads of varied departments and organizations on Thursday the Karachi commissioner said that in view of steady increase in the number of people, rushing towards beaches and ignoring warnings about high tides, it was important that presence of divers and life guards are ensured round the clock at the points. Roshan Ali Shaikh said it is nothing unusual that people from all parts of the country visit Karachi during vacations and alongwith Karachiites do attempt to not only enjoy the breeze but also brave the waves and swim against the current. In his letter addressed to Additional Inspector General of Police, Karachi range, DIG-Police, DIG Traffic Police, Managing Director of Karachi Water and Sanitation Board, Deputy Commissioner of Karachi West, South and Malir, Pakistan Navy, Sindh Rangers, senior director of medical services of Karachi Municipal Corporation, senior director of health services, DG. Pakistan Coast Guards the Karachi Commissioner also sought presence of community wardens and volunteers supported by different NGOs. He said besides first aid provided by volunteers the ambulance service must also be regularized and dispensaries established at different points of the city coast be well equipped and adequately manned by trained medical professionals. Roshan Ali Shaikh mentioned that presence of gel fish and sand worm at the beaches and people often get stung by these creatures making the presence of adequately functional dispensaries all the more important. He particularly urged the police department to ensure safety of picnickers going to recreational points located on the coastal belt of Karachi. It is our collective responsibility to ensure protection of lives as well as belongings of the picnickers, said the commissioner. Karachi commissioner, Roshan Ali Shaikh has directed the district commissioners to ensure that concerned assistant commissioners, pertaining to their respective districts, to be in contact with all departments and ensure implementation of his directives.
