Punjab Finance Minister Rana Asif Mehmood resigned from his office following a controversy over getting the provincial finance portfolio on a reserved seat for minorities as well as for holding a dual nationality.
Sources in the Punjab Assembly confirmed his resignation saying that the former minister had obtained the slot through fraudulent acts and that he had no option but to quit.
The Punjab chief minister had recently appointed Rana Mehmood as the finance minister to present the provincial budget for 2012-13.
Rana Mehmood was inducted in the Punjab Assembly as a member on a seat, NM-366, reserved for minorities.
The former law minister told reporters at the Punjab Assembly that the party’s central leadership had asked him to resign due to the controversy he was facing.
Rana Asif was elected as the finance minister on a reserved minority seat as a goodwill gesture.
Answering a question, the minister said the Punjab CM will appoint a new finance minister within a day or two.
