Punjab Governor Sardar Latif Khan Khosa said the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) believes in free, fair and transparent elections to strengthen the democratic process in the country.
He was speaking during a meeting with an eight-member European Union delegation at the Governor’s House. The EU delegation was led by EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy representative Catherine Ashton.
The governor said for the first time in the history of Pakistan, a democratically elected government was completing five years of its constitutional tenure.
He stated that all the powers have been devolved to the parliament under the 18th Amendment.
The PPP government was seeking collaboration with the European Union to enhance trade ties, he said, adding that Pakistan stood with the global community against the war on terrorism.
Catherine Ashton lauded the role of Pakistan in the war against terrorism and said the EU stood with Pakistan. Ashton said the EU wanted to boost trade ties with Pakistan as they were off the view that economic uplift could be beneficial in countering terrorism.
The other members of the delegation included David O’Sullivan, Lars Gunnar Wigemark, Viorel Isticoaia, Steven Everts, Michael Mann, Pierre Mayaudov and Louise Kornung.
