The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan has admitted the petitions filed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) against the National Assembly speaker’s ruling in favour of the prime minister after his conviction by the apex court. The court issued notices to the parties concerned, including the federation of Pakistan, the prime minister, and the attorney general.
A three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain issued the notices after hearing the petitioners in preliminary proceedings. In their petitions, the PML-N and the PTI argued that Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani was a convict and should be disqualified under Article 63-1(g) of the constitution. A premier, once convicted, stands disqualified from his seat, and the disqualification does not require any ruling from the NA speaker, the petitions said. The Supreme Court had convicted Gilani on April 26 in the contempt of court case after his refusal to write a letter to the Swiss authorities for reopening money laundering cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

  1. This government must be banned from working for further period. As they are not deserved to be given green card. They are the violators of laws of the state and whole cabinet must be banned lifeterm punishment for chalenging the laws.

    • Mr. Younus Butt (CHHUT SABB) Govts are never banned from working. They are removed by army. What are laws? In Pakistan everyone who gets some power including judges and media starts considering themselves above law. Even judiciary whose role it is to interpret law seeks to amend and make constitution. Was there any legal govt in Pakistan except for a period of 15 years? So dont apply law selectively. Try to be a mentally honest person.

    • Judges are acting like a political party, and they are unable to deliver justice. What was the need to call PM? It stinks of revenge mentality. It was enough to call Speaker becoz she gave the ruling, and now she is answerable to SC becoz of this ruling. But judges taste presence of PM. It is ironic they never call Kiyani or DGISI. If they really bold and believe in delivering justice, they shud call Kiyani and DG ISI in "Missing persons case". Coward! They called a bearded lawyer of ISI.

  2. The speaker is always on foreign trips. Must be nice to jet set around the globe on someone else's money. How would she know the law if she is hardly ever present in the parliament? Everytime I hear any news on the parliament, she is always on a trip abroad. Must be hard living in hotel rooms all the time 🙂
