Press Council of Pakistan (PCP) Chairman Shafqat Abbasi has said the council’s aim is to enforce the ethical code of practices and that people can approach it if they have any grievance against any newspaper.
Addressing a meeting at a local hotel on Saturday, he said the PCP regional offices will be set up in Karachi and Lahore during the coming days.
He stated they were taking the educational institutions on board that were offering media education subjects and organising seminars to make the students aware of the media code of ethics.
“A debate has been initiated to create awareness among university students on ethics,” he added.
Veteran journalist Zia Shahid said the codes of ethics had been formed in different departments of the press and that the PCP was trying to compile them.
He said if any newspaper had a complaint against the government; it could bring it to the PCP.
Noted journalists Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Shami said nothing should be printed without verification otherwise problems could arise.
“The PCP is providing an option that before litigation the matter should be brought to it for solution,” he added.
Atta-ur-Rehman, Arshad Arif and Munnu Bhai were also present.
