The Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), in a press release issued on Friday, said fire broke out in the jungle in the vicinity of the Tarbela Dam, at about 9 pm Thursday night.
Although the fire started away from the switchyard and the power station, the operation to control and extinguish the fire was immediately started by the WAPDA fire fighters placed at the project.
In addition, fire brigades of other institutions and areas also reached the site to participate in the operation. As a result of the concerted efforts of these teams, the fire was completely controlled and extinguished later that same night.
As a precautionary measure, the Tarbela Power Station and the transmission lines had to be closed by the operational staff. However, the power station and the transmission lines were made operational by 2 am after the fire in the bushes and trees was extinguished. All the units of the Tarbela Power Station are operating since then and contributing to the national grid as usual.
Meanwhile, WAPDA thanked the fire fighters of the Special Services Group, Army Aviation, Topi Cantonment Board, Naushera Cantonment Board, Pakistan Locomotive Company Risalpur, Gaddon Amazai Industrial Estate, Haripur, Abbottabad, Swabi, Mardan, Takht Bahai, Naushera and Rescue 1122 Peshawar for their timely assistance.
It is worth mentioning here that WAPDA had developed paths in the thick forest around Tarbela Dam, which greatly helped in the quick movement of the fire fighters.
