Street vendors selling unhygienic foodstuff are spreading various diseases among the consumers in twin cities of Islamabd and Rawalpindi.
Many people have become sick after eating unhygienic food from the street vendors as they serve the edibles in dirty plates and do not bother cleaning the plates properly. It has been learnt that these drinks are prepared in very unsafe conditions by using contaminated water, ice, artificial colours and flavour, putting public health at risk. The drinks on sale include different fruit juices, ice-lollies, ice creams and other different sorts of beverages. Vendors are selling juice of stale fruits at low price, especially at the bus stops of Faizabad, Karachi Company, Aabpara, Melody and outside the schools in almost every sector of the capital.
The doctors have warned that substandard drinks and edibles may cause diseases like typhoid, hepatitis, diarrhoea, different kinds of infections and tonsillitis.
Dr Aftab Ali Malik, medical practitioner at a local hospital said that people should not purchase foods and beverages from street vendors, especially in summer. He said the ratio of the above mentioned diseases increased by 50 percent in summer because of unhygienic food and drinks and he demanded of the government to immediately impose a ban on the sale of unhygienic food, especially outside the schools.
He said if such a ban was not possible, the government should direct roadside vendors to adopt strict safety measures like using disposable utensils, paper glasses and proper covering of edibles. Dr advised people to avoid eating food from roadside stalls and urged people to use only boiled, filtered or mineral water in summer.
