Train travel becomes a life-taking experience

One passenger died and several others either became unconscious or suffered heatstroke due to the extraordinary delay of the Awami Express on Thursday. The Karachi-Lahore train was scheduled to arrive in Lahore on Wednesday morning, but it reached the destination with a 16-hour delay. Due to scorching heat and lack of facilities in the train, Yaseen, 60, of Shikarpur could not survive the final journey of his life, and breathed his last near Patoki.
Yasin’s window said her husband died of heat and lack of facilities in the train. His relatives arrived at the Lahore Railway Station to receive his dead body. Meanwhile, passengers said that several travellers had either fallen unconscious or suffered heat strokes, while others struggled to survive due to the lack of essential facilities in the train. They said there had been shortage of water on the train, while faulty electric fans added to their miseries. Besides, the unavailability of cold water at the railway stations reflected a picture of bygone decades, they added.
