Andy Coulson, British Prime Minister David Cameron’s former media chief, will “vigorously contest” the perjury charge against him, his lawyer said Thursday. Coulson was arrested Wednesday and charged with perjury as part of an examination of the evidence given at the 2010 trial, also on perjury charges, of Scottish politician Tommy Sheridan. The case related to a story in media baron Rupert Murdoch’s now-defunct News of the World newspaper, which Coulson edited from 2003 to 2007. “Andy Coulson will vigorously contest the perjury allegations made against him yesterday by Strathclyde Police, should they ever result in a trial,” his lawyer Jo Rickards said in a statement. “We have no further comment at this stage.” A decision must be taken by Scotland’s state prosecution service about whether Coulson should face a trial.
