National Assembly (NA) Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza on Wednesday said that she had not received any notice from the Supreme Court regarding the petitions filed against her ruling in the favour of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in the contempt of court case.
She was talking to media after inaugurating the building of Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services (PIPS) in Islamabad.
“The speaker is the custodian of the parliament and this portfolio should be respected. I had summoned Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Abid Sher Ali for their alleged involvement in creating hurdles in parliament’s proceedings but they have not come. Parliamentarians have to use their potentials for making the upcoming budget people-friendly,” the speaker said. She said that Rule 28 was “very much clear about the capacity of the speaker’s ruling”.
She refused to comment on a query on the case of dual nationalities of the parliamentarians, saying the matter was sub-judice.
Speaking on the occasion, Sindh Assembly Speaker Nisar Khoro spoke against National Assembly Opposition Leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan. “If Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan can not give respect to the people of other provinces, he would not be respected. No one has the right to ridicule the culture of others and any member of provincial assembly could table a privilege motion against any person,” Khoro said. He said the privilege committee of the provincial assembly had summoned Chaudhry Nisar several times but he had not appeared before the committee nor he sent any answer. Answering a query he said, the rules and procedures of the privilege committee permitted it to issue Chaudhry Nisar’s arrest warrant.
