The Supreme Court Tuesday granted 4 weeks time to Senator Babar Awan for his testimony in contempt of court case.
A two-member bench comprising of Justice Athar Saeed and Justice Ejaz Afzal heard the proceedings of the contempt of court case.
Attorney General Irfan Qadir, as a prosecutor, presented the CD of the press conference as evidence and said if the SC wanted to record his statement on the matter, he was ready to do that. The SC then recorded statement of the prosecutor.
Objecting over evidence and statement of the prosecutor, Senator Babar Awan said he would inform the court about reasons of his objection later.
“If the objection is made over any evidence then according to law, the person who objected is bound to record his statement immediately and Senator Babar Awan has to record his objection immediately”, Justice Ejaz Afzal said.
Then Senator Babar Awan recorded his objection statement and said that his press conference was not against the apex court and objected over presenting the CD of press conference as evidence. He said he would continue to respect courts as a lawyer.
“I had rendered an unconditional apology but court refused to accept it, I request to SC not to prosecute me as US authorities did with Dr. Afia Siddiqui because I am cooperating with the court”, Senator Babar Awan stated.
Then Justice Ejaz Afzal remarked, “Your trial is very different from Dr. Afia Siddiqui and you will be provided full chance to defend yourself”.
Senator Babar Awan then asked the SC to grant him 8 weeks time for accumulating evidences for presenting it before the court.
The SC then granted 4 weeks time to Senator Babar Awan and adjourned the hearing till June 27.
The former Law Minister has been charged for contempt of court case after he criticized an apex court verdict handed down on December 1, 2011, pertaining to the formation of a judicial commission to probe the Memogate scandal.
