The lawyers’ community during its convention declared Yousaf Raza Gilani’s holding the office of the country’s prime minister as illegal and demanded his immediate resignation. The lawyers from across Punjab attended a convention on Sunday which was organised by District Bar Lahore at Aiwan-e-Adl.
The convention adopted a unanimous resolution calling for Gilani’s resignation and threatened to hold long march if he failed to honour the apex court’s verdict.
The convention was attended by Lahore Bar Association Vice President Faiz Khokhar, Secretary General Asad Zaidi, Rawalpindi Bar association Secretary General Imran Ali Malik, Gujrat Bar Association President Qazi Zafrulah, Sargodha Bar Association President Shams Naveed Cheema, Kasum Bar Association Secretary Shahid Nadeem and others.
The resolution adopted during the convention said that Gilani stood disqualified after a decision of the apex court and that the legal community stood behind the Chief Justice of Pakistan and would protect the independence of judiciary at all costs.
They vowed to enforce and implement all judicial orders and said that certain elements wanted to divide the community but such attempts would be foiled like in the past.
The resolution also criticised use of contemptuous statements and expressions about the judiciary and said responsible persons were guilty of ridiculing the constitution and law of the land.
They also condemned killing and torture of lawyers in Karachi and Balochistan.
