Education can help eliminate terrorism

Punjab Education Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman has said complete elimination of terrorism and extremism is necessary for the progress and prosperity of the country.
“Unemployment and poverty can be minimised through eradication of terrorism whereas extremism can be rooted out through promotion of quality education,” he added. Talking to delegations at his residence on Sunday the minister said 262,500 students under the age of 4 to 15 years were getting education under informal basic education schools.
He said the Punjab Education Foundation (PEF) was providing grant and scholarships to private educational institutions and students as private educational institutions were providing valuable services in the field of education. The government, he said, was fully aware of its responsibility in developing the education sector by providing basic education and it was why it had launched a primary enrolment campaign to achieve 100 percent literacy in the province.
Separately, PEF Chairman Raja Anwar said on Sunday that corporal punishment was effectively banned in its 4,700 partner schools where 1.3 million students were enroled in 36 districts of the province.
Talking to delegations at his residence, Anwar said collaboration of an organisation like Plan Pakistan was very valuable in developing an organised, useful and pro-active mechanism to ensure complete elimination of smacking.
He expressed satisfaction that the technical assistance of Plan Pakistan had helped to run the pilot project of prohibiting corporal punishment in schools in Chakwal, Vehari, Rajanpur, Layyah and Muzafargarh efficiently.

Time to clean
the reservoirs

Planning and Development Minister Ch Abdul Ghafoor ordered cleansing of overhead reservoirs and make them functional for smooth supply of potable water to people.
He also took notice to the closure of 1,343 redundant water supply schemes worth millions of rupees throughout the province and directed to make them operational on a priority basis.
Presiding over a meeting of the Chief Minister Committee for Restoration of Water Supply and Sewerage Schemes on Sunday, he said DCOs and MPAs concerned had been asked to submit budgetary proposals for restoration of such water schemes so that the amount should be allocated in the upcoming annual budget.
