Speaker’s decision to strengthen democracy, says Hashmi

Evacuee Trust Property Board Chairman Syed Asif Hashmi said on Saturday that the National Assembly speaker’s decision would strengthen democracy in the country.
Speaking at a function at the Urdu Bazaar, he said the elements who wanted to derail the democratic system were frustrated by the stance taken by Speaker Fehmida Mirza. He said Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani was an elected prime minister and only the parliament could decide on his disqualification. A smear campaign, he said, has been launched to stop the prime minister from forming new provinces.
“All conspiracies will meet their logical end. The days are over when dictators used to topple elected governments and clamp emergencies or martial laws,” Hashmi said.
He said the PPP was a popular political force of the country and that the government had inherited the present energy crisis from its predecessors and hoped it would be overcome shortly. Coming hard on the PML-N leadership, Asif Hashmi said the Sharif brothers always played the politics of hypocrisy. He said the PPP will win the upcoming elections with a significant majority.
