The Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has offered one million books to public libraries for the promotion of education across the country as 1.3 million university students benefit from these libraries. Addressing the launch of the ‘International Journal of Information Management Sciences’ on Saturday, under the auspices of the Pakistan Librarian Welfare Organisation, AIOU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nazir Ahmed Sangi said the university will utilise all available resources to ensure the provision of modern facilities to the students and to improve its services.
He said the university had recently started a programme, ‘Jahan Talibilam Wahan Ustad’ aimed at promoting modern scientific education through the local faculty. He stated that the university was ready to support public libraries for providing research facilities to students. Punjab Library Director General Atta Muhammad Khan said the government was spending a hefty amount on the promotion of libraries and research work, adding that the countries which continued research never faced downfall. He added that in the last few years, Pakistan has progressed in research, specially in the library and information sciences.
Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood, AIOU Regional Director Muhammad Aslam, Quaid-e-Azam Library Chief Librarian Abid Ali Gill and Punjab University Chief Librarian Muhammad Hanif were also present on the occasion.
It is an excellent offer by the VC AIOU. Public libraries should come forward and cooperate with AIOU.
