Making Punjab flood-proof: PDMA

Provincial Disaster and Management Authority Director General Mujahid Sherdil has said the arrangements have been finalised for coping with any emergency situation arising from floods in the province and that seven cities have been directly linked with a civilian wireless system for acquiring the latest information.
He stated that the fortification of all spurs and embankments is being carried out while relief camps have been identified for providing immediate relief to the flood victims. He said the establishment of modern prefabricated storage houses in eight districts of the province will also be completed under the World Food Programme in eight districts before the onset of the monsoon season. He was presiding over a meeting regarding flood arrangements on Friday. Senior officers of various departments were also present on the occasion.
Sherdil said the arrangements have been completed for coping with the threat of possible floods due to climate changes. He added that the disaster response force has been alerted in all the districts for dealing with any emergency situation. The disaster response force has a fleet of modern boats which can be utilised in case of need he said.
The director said the Command, Control and Communication (3-C) Center established in the PDMA building has been linked via a wireless network with seven districts including Mianwali, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Rahim Yar Khan and Sialkot for immediate exchange of information.
He stated that prefabricated storage systems, with a capacity of storing 350 metric tonnes of food, have been set up in Rajanpur, Bahawalpur, Bhakkar, DG Khan, Gujrat, Mianwali and Rawalpindi as these districts are cut off from other areas during floods.
Sherdil added that the process of fortification of spurs and embankments is being closely monitored in the province.
