The executive committee of Sindh Chamber of Agriculture expressing its concern over the acute shortage of water in Sindh has demanded of the government to ensure availability of water in the province according to the 1991 Water Accord. The executive committee which met here on Friday under the chair of its President Dr. Syed Nadeem Qamar also demanded to initiate steps for overcoming acute shortage of water so that the growers take a sigh of relief.
The meeting observed that continuous receding of water from Sukkur and Kotri Barrage has created acute shortage of water in various parts of Sindh including Tando Muhammad Khan, Shaikh Bhirkiyo, Thatta, Badin and Mirpurkhas resulting in unrest among the growers as they are unable to sow Kharif crops. The meeting observed that non implementation of Water Accord as a result of which, Sindh is not getting its due share of water. The meeting also expressed concern over slow pace of work on the repair of damaged portions of Left Bank Outfall Drain Project. The Met Office has already forecast expected heavy rainfalls and floods during monsoon season, therefore, the work of repairing the damaged portions of LBOD Projects should be geared up and completed on time, the meeting demanded.
