Upon receiving information that Book City, a bookshop known for selling O and A Level textbooks located in Main Market, Gulberg, was selling pirated copies of Oxford University Press (OUP) books, Roving Source-a security concern engaged in providing trademark and copyright protection services in Pakistan-with the assistance of the Ghalib Market police, conducted a raid at the bookshop. During the successful raid, around 250 pirated copies of leading Oxford O and A Level textbooks and dictionaries were recovered. Some of the important titles seized were ‘Explaining Physics’, ‘Economics: A Complete Course’, ‘Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary’, ‘Oxford English’-Urdu Dictionary’, ‘Oxford Playscripts series’, ‘Oxford School Shakespeare’ series, and ‘Pakistan: History, Culture, and Government’. The owner of the bookshop, Imran Khan, along with two of his salesmen, were apprehended and kept in police custody for two days. The police have lodged an FIR against the culprit on charges of possessing and selling pirated books which constitutes a violation of the Copyright Laws of Pakistan.
Such infringements of Intellectual Property Rights cause heavy losses to the publishing industry.
