On Dr Afridi’s conviction

Dr Shakeel Afridi’s 33 year prison sentence is something that pinches the USA the most. They have termed it as unjust and unwarranted and have threatened Pakistan with dire consequences if the sentenced Dr is not released. Initially, they have cut the aid to Pakistan and have warned of further cuts if Pakistan pays no heed to them.

The US’ keen interest in this case is not without rhyme or reason. Dr Shakeel Afridi worked for the USA and is one of aides who are working in Pakistan for the same “Master”. If the US shows no reaction against this imprisonment and does not save Dr Afridi, the unrest amongst others is certain. They would think if the US fails to save Dr Afridi, what would be their plight, if they are caught and are awarded such sentences.

Pakistan should not be lenient in this case. This is a high time to do what is in our best national interest. Those who work for foreign powers should be given a strong message of dire consequences if they do not “mend their ways”
