Dr Shakil Afridi, sentenced to 33 years in imprisonment for helping the CIA get to al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad, is physically and mentally unstable, and needs proper medical care.
Afridi, after announcement of the sentence, was shifted to Central Jail Peshawar and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government declared high alert for his safety. Some high-ranking officials told Pakistan Today that upon arrival at Central Jail Peshawar, Afridi fell unconscious. Immediately, jail doctors and paramedics were summoned and after provision of first aid, his condition became normal and he was shifted to his cell. The official further said that early Thursday morning, two doctors were summoned for check up of Afridi. One of the doctors was summoned from Police and Services Hospital Peshawar and after a detailed check up, prescribed some medicines. However, the doctors also suggested a detailed check up through a proper medical board of specialists.
The doctors said Afridi not only remained in isolation during the last one year, but he was under tremendous pressure and tension. During this period, he remained in custody of secret agencies and he was thoroughly interrogated. The doctors, according to officials, also confirmed that during the interrogation process, Dr Afridi sustained torture, which affected his eye sight.
