Punjab Governor Sardar Latif Khan Khosa said on Thursday that Yusuf Raza Gilani will continue as the prime minister and that the people demanding his disqualification were actually interested in the derailment of democracy.
Speaking at a reception he hosted in honour of Shayan Aneeq Akhtar, the world’s second youngest qualified Microsoft professional at the Governor’s House, he said Gilani was an elected prime minister and asking his removal was highly undemocratic and an insult to 200 million people’s mandate.
He said the National Assembly speaker had decided not to send the reference against the prime minister to the Election Commission. It is the right of Parliament to elect or disqualify the prime minister, he added. The governor termed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s remarks regarding the imposition of an emergency and martial law as unconstitutional.
Khosa said the court has no authority to impose an emergency or martial law. He stated that there was a democratic government in Balochistan and that there was no need to impose an emergency in the province. He said the government was spending hefty amounts for the promotion of Information Technology in the country.
