Yet another electricity bomb in the making

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) on Wednesday requested National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to further raise the power tariff by Rs 2 per unit. According to NEPRA, the purchasing agency submitted a petition to NEPRA to hike power tariffs by Rs 2 per unit under fuel adjustment for the month of April. According to NEPRA officials, electricity totaling 6.57 billion units was sold to distributing companies during April and of this, 41 percent of power was produced from costly furnace oil. The reference fuel cost of the electricity for April was Rs 7.69 per unit. The fuel cost on the power generation was Rs 9.69. It was only on Tuesday when NEPRA hiked power tariffs by Rs 2.38 per unit for the month of February and March.
