US Senators John McCain and Carl Levin, the chair and ranking members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, on Wednesday said the US should not pay $5,000 per truck demanded by Pakistan for supplies to troops in Afghanistan, which McCain called “extortion”. Talking to “The Cable”, Senator McCain said: “We can’t look at aid in that light. It’s now becoming a matter of principle.” Meanwhile, Senator Carl Levin said the US should not pay Pakistan fees anywhere near that level. The reactions from the US senators come in light of a New York Times report which stated that Pakistan wanted upwards of $5,000 for each truck that passed through its territory, whereas the fees paid prior to the Salala attack was about $250 per truck.
"extortion" is what every US taxpayers would say. Nothing new — it's already in their perception about Pakistan …
No one has asked the US to send its trucks to Afghanistan. It is the US which wants to send its cargo – "There is no such thing as a free lunch" as they Americans always say. Pakistan is well within its rights demand anything and everything it requires from the USA to pay, $ 5000 is too little, the USA should be paying $ 50 thousand per truck. The USA for that matter has not right whatsoever to dictate its own terms and conditions which are convenient to it. What suits the USA does not necessarily benefit Pakistan. Pakistan should do only what is in the best interest of Pakistan, not what is the best interest of the USA.
