The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has permitted the distribution companies to raise the power tariff as much as Rs 2.38 per unit to recuperate the increased fuel price for February-March 2012. NEPRA officials said the authority had approved Rs 0.59 per unit raise for February 2012, and Rs 1.79 per unit for March 2012 – increasing overall Rs 2.38 per unit against the two months under fuel adjustment. Officials said that these charges would be received in the electricity bills of September and October after final approval from the Ministry of Water and Power. Officials said that consumers of Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) and those using less than 50 units would be exempted from the fuel adjustment charges.
They said the authority would collect Rs 26 billion from the fuel adjustment charges for February and March 2012.
They said that a notification would soon be issued in this regard by the ministry, and the fuel adjustment charges would be added into the electricity bills.
On Wednesday (today), a special meeting of the federal cabinet would be held under Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani. Sources said the issue of power outages would top the ten-point agenda of the meeting.
