Eminent consultant neurologist and former head of Neurology Department at Agha Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Dr Nadir Ali Syed, urged young doctors to understand the difference between healing and curing. Addressing the participants of 6th annual neurology research day organised at Shifa International Hospital (SIH) on Monday, he said curing is to treat a disorder in the body, but healing the disease leads a patient to live a full life. “We need to remember the patient as the ultimate focus of all our efforts,” he said.
A large number of doctors, postgraduate residents of neurology departments from different hospitals of the twin cities and senior consultants attended the event, said a press release issued here. The aim of the conducting annual research day was to promote neurological research in the country. Neurology Department SIH Head Dr Arsalan Ahmad and Consultant Neurologist Dr. Maimoona Siddiqui organised the event. Many students presented their research work and posters on this occasion.
Dr Nadir said neurological research over the last 30 years has yielded huge gains in understanding of disease and gaining insights into potential treatment.
Dr Nadir said neurology is perhaps the most rapidly evolving field of medicine. “We need to stop to think about what is truly important in the field of medicine. We need to maintain our focus on patients and uphold our humility,” he pointed out.
