About 3,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in northeast Italy’s Emilia Romagna region, where a fresh 5.1 magnitude quake struck on Sunday afternoon.
The quake hit the zone around Ferrara at around 1300 GMT, forcing the collapse of several structures already weakened by the 6.0 magnitude quake that struck early Sunday and killed at least six. A firefighter fell from a wall during the new quake, Italian media reported. Unconscious and in serious condition, he has been taken to hospital, the ANSA news agency reported. Another part of the town hall at Sant’Agostino of Ferrara also collapsed in the quake, which was felt in Bologna and Milan as well. Meanwhile, most among the 3,000 evacuees were from the Modena area, while 500 were asked to leave their homes in the area around Ferrara. Authorities were also forced to evacuate 500 detainees from the prison in Ferrara.
