Miscreants riding on a motorcycle shot dead a senior prison official here in the city on Saturday-Sunday night.
Police said that chief warden of the district prison, Imtiaz Ahmad, was sprayed with bullets near his office when two miscreants riding on motorcycle opened indiscriminate fire at him, inflicting critical injuries on him.
Police said that miscreants fled from the crime scene while Imtiaz Ahmad instantly succumbed to his injuries.
Police and security forces are frequently attacked in the insurgency-plagued Balochistan province.
Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LJ) claimed responsibility for the killing, telling local media: “The slain warden was a cruel person and used to subject our imprisoned leaders and workers to torture.”
Earlier this month a senior police official was assassinated in Quetta in another drive-by shooting claimed by LJ.
On April 29, British aid worker Khalil Dale was found beheaded in Quetta, nearly four months after he was kidnapped in the city. There has been no claim of responsibility for his murder.
Over the past few years, hundreds of people have been killed while situation in Balochistan is worsening with each passing day.
