Jamaat-e-Islami General Secretary Liaqat Baloch has demanded Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to bring the killer of Punjab University student Awais Aqeel to justice and to enquire into the matter with impartiality and play his role in restoring peace in PU.
Addressing a press conference along with JI Ameer Ameer-ul-Azim at the Lahore Press Club, he strongly condemned the baton charge, shelling and firing on the students and termed it a brutal act on the part of the police. He demanded that students arrested from Mall Road for staging a protest against the killing of Awais Aqeel be immediately released. He said many political parties such as the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N), the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) and others had been protesting at the Mall Road for their demands but the police had taken action only against innocent students. He alleged that PU and the provincial government were providing support to the killers and the case had become a test for the Punjab government. He warned that should the Punjab University administration and provincial government not stop patronising the culprits, the protest would spread throughout the country.
Baloch said due to the decision taken by government to resume the NATO supply, the situation had grown worse.
“The nation is set to launch a big movement against the resumption of NATO supply. Therefore, a conspiracy is being hatched against students in order to prevent them from taking part in the movement,” he added. Ameer-ul-Azim said the PU administration and agencies set fire to the buses in order to crush the protest. He stated that the proofs of the incident would be made public.
