Punjab Education Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman said the government was implementing a comprehensive programme for providing modern educational facilities to students.
Addressing a meeting on Wednesday, he said the government was working hard to achieve an 88 percent literacy rate before 2015 in order to fulfill the international commitment made under the millennium development goals. He said 262,500 students under the age of 4 to 15 years were receiving education under non-formal basic education schools. He stated that private educational institutions are performing a valuable service in the field of education and that the government is providing cooperation and assistance to the private sector. The minister added that the government schools were given the status of English medium schools last year, while the Punjab government has also launched a vigorous campaign to increase primary enrolment.
