Punjab Governor Latif Khan Khosa said on Tuesday that Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gillani was punished under a contempt of court ordinance which did not exist and that he was convicted without adopting the due process of law.
Taking to an All Pakistan Newspaper Society (APNS) delegation, led by its president Sarmad Ali, which called on him at the Governor’s House, he said the man who was talking about the disqualification of the prime minister was not eligible for the office he held as he was not a constitutional member of the provincial assembly.
The governor briefed the delegation about the performance and achievements of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). He said it was the mission of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto to strengthen the provinces and that President Asif Zardari was advancing their mission.
He said a democratically elected government was being criticised by an unconstitutional chief minister and that it was an act of treason.
“The PPP does not want to derail democracy in the country otherwise the governor has the authority to disqualify the unconstitutional chief minister,” he added.
Replying to a question about Saraiki province, he said it was the need of the hour as the locals had not been given due rights. He added that the Punjab government was spending Rs 35,000 on each citizen of Lahore but the amount spent on the people living in southern Punjab was lower than Rs 1,000.
