The Defence Committee of the Cabinet (DCC) late on Tuesday decided to put on hold the vital decision of reopening NATO supply routes for a day or two and directed the Foreign Ministry and other relevant government departments to complete dialogue with their US counterparts on the re-engagement process.
However, a source told Pakistan Today that it had been decided in principle that the government would reopen NATO supply routes.
The DCC decided to include a new clause in the terms and conditions, as recommended by parliament, to the effect that only non-lethal cargo would be allowed to transit through Pakistan to Afghanistan.
The DCC met with Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in the chair and was attended by ministers for defence, interior, foreign affairs, information and broadcasting, the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and all services chiefs, as well as the ISI director general.
The committee reviewed Pakistan’s cooperation in the context of international community’s security and stabilisation efforts in Afghanistan.
Sticking to the letter and spirit of parliamentary committee’s recommendations, the DCC authorised officers of relevant ministries/departments to conclude the ongoing negotiation on the new terms and conditions for resumption of GLOCs.
It was also decided that the military authorities should negotiate fresh border ground rules with NATO/ISAF to ensure that Salala type incidents did not recur.
The DCC welcomed the unconditional invitation by the NATO Secretary General to the president of Pakistan to attend the NATO summit in Chicago. The DCC fully endorsed the visit of the president for the summit.
The committee further decided that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would continue to remain engaged with the government of the United States on other parliamentary recommendations, including the question of apology and cessation of drone attacks.
The committee also discussed parliament’s call for expulsion of foreign fighters, if found, on the Pakistani side.
The DCC discussed the invitation extended by NATO Secretary General Rasmussen to President Asif Ali Zardari to attend the NATO summit being held in Chicago on May 20-21.The source, however, said the prime minister had made up his mind to reopen NATO supply routes during his UK visit and British Prime Minister David Cameron had had a specific influence in this regard.
The source said Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar had made positive statements reflecting the government’s intentions to all stakeholders in this regard. The source said the prime minister, on his return from the UK, also released a statement that 48 nations wanted to get NATO supply routes reopened and said Pakistan could not be left in isolation. However, the source said, the DCC decided to delay the announcement to negate any impression that Pakistan had taken the decision under foreign pressure. “It was British Prime Minister David Cameron who played a key role in convincing Prime Minister Gilani to reopen the NATO supply routes. During the recent visit of Gilani to the UK, when he was being condemned at home for visiting the United Kingdom even after even conviction by the apex court of the country, Cameroon made sure to provide full protocol and accompanied him to the newly formed friends of Pakistan forum,” the source said. The source added that the prime minister had already made up his mind to reopen NATO supply routes while in London and he had directed authorities back home on May 10 to convene the DCC meeting for May 15. The source said besides pampering under-pressure Prime Minister Gilani with high-profile protocol, Cameron also announced to provide Pakistan heavy financial assistance over the next four years.
Of course NATO gets it. All it had to do was shove Bambo up the back side of Zardari
I bet Zardari enjoyed it
Its US that gets its Way. Nato Follows

David Cameron summons convicted Paki prime minister gillani to London. Probably beats him up in the bathroom. Tells him how he has to behave or else he'll get a time out. gillani gets scared and decides to reopen supply routes. End of story.
"Paki" is a racist and derogatory term. Evidently it was coined by the British Skin Heads and Neo-Nazis to describe Pakistani immigrants in the early 1970s. Don't fall prey to this term. Don't use it.
Too much brave talk and this is how it ends …
From day 1, everybody in position knew how weak Pakistan's hand is but didn't want to get whipped by the political scorers (like Imran etc.. – who does not have to prove anything) …
Where are the protecters of Pakistan. Has cat taken their tongue?
Where is Imran
Where is Ch Nisar
Where are Sherief brothers
Where is Munawer Hussain.
The army has given them danda this is the reason. Why blame PPP.
There was never a question that NATO supply routes were to be permanently banned from Pakistan.
The questions were weather the terms set by the parliament, will be forced upon America to accept, before restoration of supplies or Pakistan has agreed to work on the same old pay, even without extracting an apology for the Salala attack, guarantee that such attacks will never be repeated and action against those reonsible of Salala attack. Moreover, drone attacks were also to be stopped on Pakistan..
These are the basic questions which the nation demands from its rulers.
Beggars can't be choosers. Those who oppose the resumption of NATO supplies through Pakistan are making noise simply because they don't have to take this decision. Had they been in power instead of the PPP, they would have done it much earlier and that too lying down.
The agents of america (terrorist #1) are ruling this country, how can they decide in the interest of the country. They have been working against the integrity and solidarity of the country in the past and would do so in future for the reason given above. They are inviting ALLAH`S wrath on doing such acts . May ALLAH help us get rid of these rulers..Ameen.
challo mubarak ho. Fruits of Democracy
