Contempt case would be closed if speaker doesn’t disqualify PM: Aitzaz

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s counsel Aitzaz Ahsan believes that the contempt of court case against his client would be closed if he is not disqualified by the National Assembly speaker following his conviction by the Supreme Court (SC).
Talking to reporters in Lahore on Tuesday, the former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) senator said that the NA speaker was the key to the door of the Election Commission of Pakistan, and that the case would be closed if the speaker does not disqualify the premier. He said the SC had not disqualified the prime minister, and his objections to the judgment were based on “constitutional grounds”.
He termed the imprisonment of 30 seconds to his client “wrong” and “against the law”. Aitzaz said that it was not possible to sentence someone to imprisonment without giving a reason for it, adding that the prime minister had “never given any indication of not accepting the court’s orders”.
He said that an appeal would be filed to challenge the verdict against Gilani. He said there are many complications in the contempt of court case, adding that the president had immunity.
