No headway into Maulana Aslam’s murder probe

After registering a case against six unknown attackers and formulating two committees, law enforcement agencies are yet to make any headway into the murder probe of Maulana Aslam Sheikhupuri, a noted cleric.
He was gunned down with two of his bodyguards and a colleague when unknown bikers ambushed his car in Dhoraji area of Bahadur Abad on Sunday. Thousands of people attended Sheikhupuri’s funeral at Tawabain Mosque in Gulshan-e-Maimar area, where he had been running a religious seminary.
The authorities have yet to collect the CCTV recordings of the incident to track down the culprits. Officials recorded statements of wounded bodyguard and a few witnesses, claiming that a “multidimensional” investigation was underway. Police said the assassins, who managed to flee from the scene after a one-and-a-half minute action, were highly trained and had full information about the cleric’s movements. “Twelve shells of 9MM pistol were found from the scene which we have sent for a forensic test,” an official, who is part of the investigation, told a private TV channel. Witnesses said one of the attackers got injured in retaliation fire by Maulana’s bodyguard, Wazir Ali, who died at the hospital later. Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik has constituted a committee to probe into the murder, mandating it to submit a report within three days.
On the other, DIG Tahir Naveed also formulated a separate committee in this regard which is working in light of the available information.
