Nursing college to be established at General Hospital

Postgraduate Medical Institute Principal and Lahore General Hospital Professor Dr Tariq Salahuddin said nurses render their services regardless of war and natural disaster and are the backbone of the medical profession.
Addressing a ceremony organised at the Lahore General Hospital Nursing School on ‘The World Nursing Day’ on Friday, he said in this era, the concept of a modern health system is not possible without the involvement of the nurses.
He added that their importance had increased during the dengue epidemic of last year.
He said the world observed this day in honour of Florence Nightingale for her contributions to the nursing profession. He stated that in Pakistan, Isma Kanwal was a counterpart of Florence Nightingale, as she died after contracting the dengue virus while performing her duties in a dengue ward.
He said any student who stood first in the nursing examination would be awarded with the annual Isma Kanwal Award. He also appealed to the federal government to grant Isma Kanwal the highest posthumous civil award.
On the occasion, he also announced to celebrate the golden jubilee of the nursing school as it completes 50 years. A nursing college would also be set up in the Lahore General Hospital, besides initiating computer classes in the school. He said nurses would also be sent abroad for training.
Nursing Federation General Secretary Nisaab Akhter demanded that more nurses be inducted. She urged the nurses to work enthusiastically to increase their professional skills.
Nursing DG Munawar Sultana said the present government had worked seriously for the first time in history for the betterment of the nurses while providing them better job opportunities.
She said under the directions of the Punjab Chief Minister, the promotion cases had been finalised while vacant seats were also being filled.
